Mercy. This trip was something else. Allow me a (long) recount of my adventure.
Yankee Stadium was among the few I’ve yet to visit and this weekend was the Subway Series - what better time to check it off! Plan was to fly in Thursday, attend the game Friday, do whatever on Saturday before flying to Rochester for a couple of days and back to Atlanta Monday. Weather in NYC wasn’t cooperating on Thursday, with JFK not allowing planes to land. After two delays in ATL we boarded the aircraft only to deplane shortly thereafter.
I’m ecstatic they let us off the plane so good job there. We did take off eventually and landed at JFK about 1230am - more than 5 hours later than I expected - but it’s leisure travel and I’m feeling leisurely.
Hop on various trains to get near my hotel and I should be there by 130 (ha!). I may have gotten on the right train, but it was certainly the wrong direction. The woman that checked my ticket looked at it…
“Where are you going?” I tell her. “Oh no honey, you’re heading the wrong way. Get off at the next stop and hop on the train going the other way.”
If I’m navigating NYC solo there is at least a 35% chance I go the wrong way on a train once. It’s just what it is.
Eh, no biggie. Another will be along in 5-7 minutes. It’s 215 now, let me see what time the next train will… 340. 340? 340?! in the AM? Oh, for the sake of… I entered my hotel room at 445am. I love that Hyatt has mobile checkin and a digital key so I didn’t have to stop at the front desk. Breakfast was at 7, decided to stay up for it; fell asleep at 645. Figures.
With the baseball game at 7pm, I decided to grab some food in the afternoon, and found a place with a soccer game on. Guy approached me to share his opinion that “systemic racism was invented by politicians to make money” and that he loved Obama and Trump, but hated Biden. When he told me whom else he didn’t like, using language that was not at all coded, I invited him to repeat himself. He declined and took his leave.

Got the game, without heading the wrong way on the train, and waited an hour before the game was postponed due to rain. Went back downtown to meet up with a friend I hadn’t seen since 1995. Caught up with him and his friends and ended up on Far Rockaway the next day.
Good vibes and good times… before my flight to ROC was delayed again. And again. And again. Then canceled outright before being reinstated and then delayed another time for good measure.
Arrived in Rochester only 4.5 hours later than I anticipated. Spent Sunday meeting new people; my friends have had kids since the last time I was in NY. Didn’t have a chance to catch up with everyone, which seems about par for this trip. Went for a game that was postponed. Flight delayed more than half a dozen times. This is what I get for trying to see the Yankees.
